It will benefit UH to invest in professors that are willing to convey information more creatively and include more project-based learning. One of the things I pursued academically at UH that was helpful was the campus research opportunity. Usually, the school is willing to fund undergraduate research opportunities. Overall I enjoyed making new friends, joining organizations, and doing research while at UH. The areas of growth which the institution could pay more attention to are the social events held on campus and the quality of teachers working at the institution.
Madelyn M. It is sometimes difficult to feel at home or to get involved. Sometimes it is unsafe given the dangerous neighborhood surrounding the university.
Much of the student population is commuter, so traffic and parking can be horrendous. Parking is especially bad on football game days. The psychology program has some wonderful professors but the building is older and the program is underfunded. Heba H. It is getting better each year, by remodeling and accommodating to students' needs. Faculty are wonderful, many are well educated, enjoy what they teach, and want you to succeed. Financial services are great, and it is possible to get a lot of financial aid to help pay for tuition.
Michelle Dorsey. I enjoyed every moment of my University career. The University of Houston was close enough to my home that I did not need to live on campus. It was so conveniently located that I was also able to work and attend school. U of H is wonderful because I spent many hours after class time rehearsing as a Dancer. Since I have graduated, there is now a wonderful Theatre major and Dance major. As an alumni, I still receive information about what is happening at the school.
University of Houston has many majors; from education to legal careers. There are also many campuses in and around Houston. For undergraduate students there are also extra curricular activities to sports teams to intramural activities.
Kimberly Martinez. Supportive professors with an array of research areas. In being part of this program, I had the opportunity to participate in research and leadership organizations that related to my field of study. Additionally, the diversity of this program was great! It feels like you have a community rooting for you! Cecelia Ottenweller. Anyone reading my review must understand this before taking my review to heart.
The mission of UH was to provide educational opportunities to non-traditional students and I was a classic case: I worked full time while pursuing my degree. The Anthropology department was less accommodating that most in that there were very few late classes to be taken after regular working hours. Fortunately, my full time job allowed me to go to school during the day. The school was also not supportive in that there were no counselors made available to me to find alternatives ways to pay for my education or for me to take advantage of study abroad opportunities.
Furthermore, the professors were unsympathetic to people working to earn their degree and made little effort to help students find ways to apply the concepts in a real-world setting. If I had the degree to do over again, I would advise undergraduates to be aggressive in finding alternatives to funding their degree than working full time and to find a program that was focused on applicability. I am recommending the school now because I understand substantial changes have occurred, but would urge applicants to be realistic about what they are expecting from their degree and the school's offerings.
They are kind and helpful with advice but professors are stern with deadlines and quality of work as they are at any university. This is helpful so that the student is able to grow and improve in their class.
This prepares students more for the rigorous nature of the real world and their future careers that may not be lenient with late attendance and deadlines. Overall, UHD is a great school and I will always recommend online courses, but if you can spare the time to attend a face to face class then, of course, that is always the better option. This is a great school that is affordable and is easy to be able to take courses around working.
Auriela Porter. I remember the decided factor that made me enroll the next day. I met with one of the advising counselors who encouraged me to go just go for it. She helped me determine that I could complete my degree and gave me some words of wisdom that made me view my goals in a different light. Sometimes we forget about the non-traditional students and if the label of a "non-traditional" student apply's to you University of Houston Downtown will be a perfect fit.
Mariyam Haideri. The jobs are more towards a business degree as per my household experience. Though the experience of getting a degree was great and I felt accomplishing something in life; on the other hand, I am still unemployed.
Rosa Santos. The school spares no expenses when it comes to their nursing students for undergraduate and faculty. I received the feed back on undergraduate from two students who are currently enrolled in the program and they are absolutely convinced that the rigors of the curriculum and faculty strictness are preparing them adequately for their future roles as BSN prepared nurses.
It has been only one week for me as a graduate student in their FNP program but the school and nursing facultly have made their expectations very clear and have provided detailed information about the course syllabus and each class being taken this semester. Chloe Jester. I have enjoyed being apart of this first class because the professors are keen to hear what we want to learn to help the program progress. UhD works with companies in Houston to tailor make the program so students are employable after graduation.
My fellow students are intelligent and make a great team. I have enjoyed learning from them. The professors are great and are really accessible to the students. Chet Everett. However, the faculty is staffed by too many adjuncts who don't really seem to care to educate. Furthermore, the curriculum is almost always derived straight from text books, sometimes not matching the proper edition, which prevents a focus on concepts and instead becomes more about vocabulary.
I did not live on campus, but I did still enjoy my time making friends and earning my degree. It's overall a good University for anyone keeping the cost of their degree down, or attempting to finish a degree with a spotty academic past.
Elmira Alizadeh. Dynamics is also described as the pattern of growth, change, and development in any field. This Dynamic force is behind my passion in pursing a graduate program and is essentially the biggest pro thus far for myself. I believe that pursuing a graduate program involves pros and pros only.
The few cons that may be associated with pursuing a graduate program at the time, are only temporary cons for those cons will be turned into pros in the long run. The pros of a graduate degree are endless.
But the most important is that of enrichment in knowledge and wisdom. The value of self-enrichment and the amount of knowledge one has is immense. This knowledge is the key to ultimate success. Another pro of a graduate degree is the advancement to a career, a career that will enable you to fully practice what you have learned and what you are so passionate about.
